Suryakumar Yadav's Journey to Captaincy

Suryakumar Yadav has shared insights into his unexpected rise to captain the Indian T20I team, taking over from Hardik Pandya following the 2024 T20 World Cup. His leadership proved pivotal as India successfully defended their title on home ground after winning the 2026 T20 World Cup. Following Rohit Sharma's retirement after the 2024 tournament, many anticipated that Hardik Pandya, who had served as vice-captain and led the team during Rohit's absence since 2022, would assume the captaincy. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a surprising choice by appointing Suryakumar as captain. This decision was speculated to be influenced by Gautam Gambhir's recent appointment as head coach, given their close ties from Suryakumar's time as vice-captain of KKR under Gambhir. Yet, Suryakumar clarified that the decision was made prior to Gambhir's arrival. He explained that the then BCCI secretary Jay Shah, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, former coach and captain Rahul Dravid, and Rohit Sharma were instrumental in this choice. “A few days before the Sri Lanka series, Jay Bhai called me to inform me about my new role as T20 captain. I sensed that this was a well-thought-out plan by Rohit Bhai and Ajit Bhai. Gautam Bhai joined later, and they had all discussed it with Jay Bhai,” Suryakumar stated.

Additionally, Suryakumar praised Shah's influence on Indian cricket and his personal career, highlighting Shah's straightforward approach and individualized treatment of players. “He has always been supportive since my Ranji Trophy debut in 2010-2011 and was encouraging when I made my India debut. I even thanked him for the opportunity back then. Every interaction with him has been constructive and uplifting,” Suryakumar added.
