Suryakumar Yadav Celebrates India's Historic T20 World Cup Victory
Historic Win for India in T20 World Cup 2026
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], March 9: Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed his excitement following India's triumph in the T20 World Cup 2026, praising star bowler Jasprit Bumrah as a "national treasure" for his remarkable talent.
He commended the performances of key players including Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and the enigmatic spinner Varun Chakravarthy for their contributions.
India's top-order batsmen, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan, delivered a powerful performance, while Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel showcased their bowling prowess, leading Team India to a historic 96-run victory over New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.
This victory marks India as the first team to clinch the T20 World Cup title on home soil, the first to win it consecutively, and the first to secure three T20 World Cup championships.
Yadav reflected on the journey, stating, "It might take some time to fully appreciate this achievement, but I am incredibly pleased with today's outcome. It has been a long road since the 2024 World Cup, with the BCCI, Jay Shah, and Rohit Sharma placing their trust in me to lead this exceptional team. Returning to the Narendra Modi Stadium and achieving this is a unique feeling. We have consistently played well over the past two years," he remarked after the match.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining the positive habits established during the 2024 T20 World Cup, recognizing the potential of players like Sanju, Abhishek, and Varun. "I knew they had the ability to be match-winners. The timing was right for Sanju to step up. Varun Chakravarthy and Abhishek Sharma are among the world's best. We always believed they had something extraordinary to offer, especially on such a grand stage. Additionally, the experience of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel has been invaluable, as they support each other and the coaching staff. It was truly special. As Sanju mentioned in the previous game, he wanted to dedicate his Man of the Match award to Jasprit Bumrah. He is a once-in-a-generation bowler, a national treasure, who knows how to perform at the highest level," he added.
In the match, after winning the toss, New Zealand opted to field first. Samson scored 89 runs off 46 balls, supported by Abhishek Sharma with 52 runs off 21 balls, Ishan Kishan with 54 runs off 25 balls, and Shivam Dube contributing 26 not out off 8 balls, propelling India to a total of 255/5.
Despite Tim Seifert's fifty (52 runs off 26 balls), the Kiwis succumbed to the exceptional bowling of Axar (3/27) and Bumrah (4/15), as the Men in Blue secured their third T20 World Cup title, becoming the first team to defend their title and the first host nation to win the trophy.
