The Supreme Court has confirmed the Delhi High Court's ruling from May 22, 2026, allowing Vinesh Phogat to compete in the upcoming Asian Games trials set for May 30-31. After announcing her retirement post-Paris 2024 Olympics, Phogat sought to return to wrestling. Earlier this month, she aimed to participate in a ranking event in Gonda but was prevented by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), which cited anti-doping regulations that barred her from competing until June 26, 2026. Phogat contended that the International Testing Agency (ITA) had authorized her to compete starting January 1, 2026.

For context, athletes returning from a break are required to provide a six-month notice period before resuming competition. Following the WFI's decision, Phogat approached the Delhi High Court, which criticized the federation's stance, stating it was not in the sport's best interest. The court deemed the WFI's ban on Phogat as exclusionary, emphasizing that it did not allow for consideration of prominent athletes like her, especially given her maternity leave.
