Sunrisers Hyderabad Sets New IPL Record with Toss Loss Streak
Historic Toss Loss for SRH
In a remarkable turn of events, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made history during their match against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) on April 21 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. After losing the toss to Axar Patel, who opted to bowl first, SRH faced their seventh consecutive toss loss. This season, SRH has batted first in all seven of their matches, while DC has won the toss in all six of their games, choosing to bowl first each time.
SRH's Unprecedented Streak
With this latest toss loss, SRH has become the first team in IPL history to bat first in each of their initial seven matches of a season. Previously, no team had achieved this feat in even six games, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) holding the record in 2016. Notably, Mumbai Indians (MI) have also had five matches batting first in various seasons.
Teams with Most Batting First Matches at Season Start
| Team | Times | Year |
| SRH | 7 | 2026 |
| RCB | 5 | 2016 |
| MI | 5 | 2018 |
| MI | 5 | 2021 |
Captain Ishan Kishan's streak of losing seven tosses is now the longest at the beginning of a captaincy career in IPL history, surpassing David Miller's previous record of five consecutive losses. This also marks the longest toss loss streak for any SRH captain, breaking David Warner's record of five. Additionally, SRH joins DC (formerly known as Delhi Daredevils) as the only teams to lose the toss in their first seven matches of a season, although DC's losses were under two different captains in 2014. SRH's current streak of seven toss losses is tied for the fourth longest in IPL history, while DC has achieved eight consecutive toss wins, marking the joint-third highest by a team, involving two captains, Faf du Plessis and Axar Patel.
