Johannesburg [South Africa], August 7: The Sunrisers Eastern Cape, champions of the SA20 league three times, are gearing up to kick off their title defense with an exciting match against the Pretoria Capitals in the upcoming fifth season. Captain Tristan Stubbs emphasizes the significance of starting strong as they aim for their fourth championship in five years.

Stubbs remarked that the opening match presents an excellent opportunity to launch the season, highlighting the necessity of performing at their peak from the very first day. He expressed optimism that a robust start could set a positive tone for the entire tournament.

“It’s a crucial game to begin with. It’s exactly what we need to get things rolling. We must be ready from day one, which will be fantastic. Hopefully, we can establish a great atmosphere for everyone from that point onward,” Stubbs shared with a media outlet.

As a native of Port Elizabeth, Stubbs has been with the Sunrisers since the league's inception. The franchise has consistently attracted large crowds at St George’s Park, known for its vibrant orange atmosphere, thanks to their ongoing success. With the tournament set to commence on January 17 in Gqeberha, Stubbs is hopeful for another enthusiastic turnout.

“It will be amazing. I think it all begins with our warm-up matches, and when our social media teams share updates, it generates excitement. I know the community will be eager for some sports action by then. Fans will come from nearby towns, all dressed in orange – it’s such a joyous occasion. If the weather cooperates, we expect a full house, which will be fantastic,” he added.

The Sunrisers' achievements can largely be credited to head coach Adrian Birrell, who has led the team since its formation. Despite changes in players and leadership before Season 4, the team managed to replicate the success of their earlier seasons.

Looking ahead to the new season, Stubbs believes it could be a breakout opportunity for young talents Mitchell van Buuren and JP King, both of whom he describes as promising players capable of making significant contributions when given the chance.

“I think we have a well-established team. Mitch van Buuren isn’t too young anymore, and I believe if he gets a chance, he will seize it. JP King is another young and exciting prospect. I’m confident that when they get their opportunities, one of them will make a strong impact,” he stated.

The Sunrisers will face the Pretoria Capitals in the tournament's opening match, a rematch of last season's final. The fifth season will take place from January 17 to February 21, 2027, culminating in the final in Gqeberha.
