Chhetri's Emotional Plea to Tata Group

New Delhi, August 2: Sunil Chhetri, the former captain of the Indian national football team, has made a heartfelt request to the Tata Group to rethink its decision to cease operations for Jamshedpur FC's first team. He described this move as "a punch to the gut" and emphasized that Indian football cannot afford to lose such a vital supporter.

In a post shared on X, Chhetri expressed his concerns regarding the precarious situation of Indian football and the significance of long-term stakeholders in the sport.

“Being a stakeholder in Indian football is a challenging endeavor. When everything seems to be falling apart, you rely on family to support one another. Often, it is the elders you turn to for reassurance,” Chhetri stated.

He acknowledged the Tata Group's invaluable contributions to football, particularly through the Tata Football Academy and Jamshedpur FC, saying, “The TATA Group has been one of our foundational pillars.”

Chhetri expressed his sorrow over the club's decision, stating, “Learning that Jamshedpur has ceased first team operations is truly disheartening.”

He pointed out the immediate repercussions for players and staff, noting that while some may eventually secure new positions, the broader implications for Indian football are severe.

“Players and staff will find themselves without clubs, and while they may eventually find new opportunities, the league will be one team short. However, the absence of the TATA Group in top-tier Indian football would be catastrophic,” he remarked.

While recognizing that commercial factors often drive sporting decisions, Chhetri urged the Tata Group to reconsider its stance.

“I understand that tough decisions in sports often stem from financial considerations. However, I sincerely hope that the decision-makers at TATA prioritize their hearts over their heads and rethink this choice. It may not seem like a sound business move, but it is what Indian football desperately needs right now,” he concluded.

On Friday, Jamshedpur FC announced its withdrawal from the Indian Super League (ISL) starting from the 2026-27 season. This decision was confirmed by Jamshedpur Football and Sporting Private Limited (JFSPL), the Tata Steel-owned organization managing the club.

Despite its exit from the ISL, JFSPL stated it would continue to support Indian football through grassroots initiatives and youth programs, reaffirming its commitment to discovering and nurturing young talent across the nation.

Established before the 2017-18 ISL season, Jamshedpur FC has participated in nine seasons of India's premier league. The club's most notable achievement was winning the ISL League Shield during the 2021-22 season under coach Owen Coyle, and it also reached the playoffs in the 2024-25 season with Khalid Jamil at the helm.

Currently, the club is competing in the ongoing Durand Cup, although it remains uncertain whether it will finish the tournament following the announcement of its ISL withdrawal.
