Celebrating India-Jamaica Relations

In Kingston, Jamaica, on May 4, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the strong historical connections between India and Jamaica, characterizing their relationship as one founded on mutual respect and friendship.

Jaishankar took to X to express, "The India-Jamaica narrative is crafted in runs, respect, and camaraderie," highlighting the cultural and sporting ties that unite the two nations.

His remarks came during an event at Sabina Park, where he collaborated with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness to inaugurate a new electronic scoreboard, a gift from India.

He expressed optimism that this scoreboard would witness numerous unforgettable cricketing moments in the years to come, serving as a testament to the strengthening partnership between the two countries.

A Nod to Cricketing Legends

In a light-hearted moment, Jaishankar noted the absence of West Indies cricketing icon Chris Gayle, acknowledging the legendary player's connection to the historic venue.

He remarked, "Joined Prime Minister @AndrewHolnessJM in formally dedicating the electronic scoreboard at Sabina Park, gifted by India. May this scoreboard count many great innings to come. Among them, that of – friendship. PS: Chris @henrygayle was missed."

A Historic Visit

Sabina Park, situated in Kingston, is renowned as one of the Caribbean's most iconic cricket venues, having hosted numerous significant matches featuring both West Indies and international teams.

Earlier, Jaishankar visited Old Harbour, Jamaica, the historic landing site of the first Indian immigrants to the Caribbean over 180 years ago.

He described this visit on X as a chance to engage with the Indian diaspora and recognize their lasting cultural impact in Jamaica. "Glad to visit Old Harbour, the historic site where the first Indians arrived in Jamaica over 180 years ago," he stated.

Jaishankar also interacted with members of the Indian-origin community, commending their dedication to preserving their heritage through generations. "Interacted with members of the Indian diaspora, witnessing how they have preserved their culture, traditions, and identity," he added.
