Sri Lanka Achieves Historic ODI Chase Against England in Tri-Series
Sri Lanka's Remarkable Victory
In a thrilling encounter on October 22 in Rawalpindi, Sri Lanka achieved a stunning victory over England in the third match of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series 2026. Chasing an enormous target of 430 runs, Sri Lanka made history by completing the second-highest successful run chase in ODI cricket.
England had set a formidable target, scoring 429 runs for the loss of four wickets, thanks to Harry Brook's record-setting double century. The highest successful chase in ODI history remains South Africa's incredible pursuit of 435 runs against Australia in 2006.
Despite Brook's historic innings, where he became the first English player to score a double century in men's ODIs with 202 runs off just 116 balls, Sri Lanka showcased an impressive batting performance. Brook's innings included 21 fours and 10 sixes, while Joe Root contributed 69 runs off 66 balls and Will Jacks added an unbeaten 66 runs off 30 balls.
Sri Lanka's chase began on a rocky note with two early wickets lost. However, Avishka Fernando and Pavan Rathnayake formed a crucial partnership that revitalized their innings. Fernando scored 97 runs off 83 balls, narrowly missing out on a century, while Rathnayake's outstanding 130 runs off 106 balls kept Sri Lanka in contention.
Dasun Shanaka then launched a spectacular counterattack, scoring 97 runs off just 50 balls, including eight sixes, bringing the target within reach. Although he fell just short of a century, his explosive innings set the stage for a nail-biting finish.
Janith Liyanage played a vital role in the final moments, contributing an unbeaten half-century as Sri Lanka completed this extraordinary run chase.
