Spain's Resounding Win Against Saudi Arabia

In Atlanta, Georgia, Spain's head coach Luis de la Fuente staunchly defended his squad following their impressive 4-0 triumph over Saudi Arabia in the FIFA World Cup 2026. He deemed it 'absurd' to question a team that has remained unbeaten for 33 matches.

After a lackluster goalless draw against Cape Verde in their initial Group H match, Spain rebounded spectacularly, showcasing a commanding performance that was bolstered by the return of young talent Lamine Yamal to the starting lineup.

This decisive victory brought Spain to four points from two games, revitalizing confidence in a team that had been under increasing scrutiny due to their slow start in the tournament.

De la Fuente expressed his disbelief at the criticism directed towards the team, stating, 'It's crazy to question this squad. We have gone 33 games without a loss. While there are good days and bad days, doubting this young generation with a promising future is simply unfair.'

He acknowledged that the criticism had motivated his players, whose pride was wounded by the negative reactions following the draw with Cape Verde. 'No one enjoys being criticized,' he remarked.

De la Fuente emphasized the need to protect his players from external distractions, saying, 'You are all great professionals. However, there are things I prefer not to hear. That's why I avoid certain programs and focus on staying positive and blocking out the noise.'

Mikel Oyarzabal, who faced criticism after his performance against Cape Verde, silenced his detractors with a stellar display against Saudi Arabia, scoring twice and assisting another goal in the first half.

Oyarzabal made history by becoming only the second player since 1966 to be involved in three goals within the first 25 minutes of a World Cup match, matching a record set by Hungary's Laszlo Fazekas in 1982.

De la Fuente praised Oyarzabal's contributions, asserting that his impact on the team transcends mere statistics. 'Those who understand football appreciate him immensely,' the coach stated.

'Sadly, some believe he doesn't have a significant influence. The impact Mikel has on the team is enormous, likely greater than any other player could provide. I am convinced he has the potential to make history in Spanish football. His statistics are remarkable, and I celebrate his performance, hoping he receives the recognition he deserves.'

Spain now stands with four points in Group H and will wrap up their group-stage matches against Uruguay on Friday. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is left with one point after two games and faces a challenging path to advance to the knockout stages.
