Spain Triumphs Over Austria 3-0, Advances to World Cup Round of 16
Spain's Dominant Performance Secures Knockout Stage Victory
Los Angeles [US], July 3: Spain showcased their strongest performance of the tournament by defeating Austria 3-0 at SoFi Stadium, successfully advancing to the Round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Spain, who had not won a knockout match in the World Cup since their triumph in 2010. Their previous attempts in 2014, 2018, and 2022 ended in disappointment, with early exits from the tournament.
The win against Austria breaks a 16-year streak without a knockout stage victory, the first since Andres Iniesta's memorable goal against the Netherlands in 2010.
Mikel Oyarzabal was the standout player, scoring two goals, while Pedro Porro also found the net for the first time in his international career. Their efforts dismantled the Austrian defense, led by coach Ralf Rangnick.
Spain dominated possession from the outset, controlling 65% of the ball and keeping Austria on the back foot. The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Cucurella assisted Oyarzabal, who calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.
Austria made a tactical change at halftime, but Spain responded with a second goal in the 66th minute, courtesy of Porro's header from Baena's cross, effectively sealing Austria's fate.
As the match neared its conclusion, Oyarzabal scored again, finishing a well-executed team play set up by Cucurella.
Notably, Barcelona's young talents, Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, made history as the first U20 duo to start a World Cup knockout match for a single nation since Brazil's Pele and Jose Altafini in 1958.
Spain's defense, led by Unai Simon, Aymeric Laporte, and Cubarsi, maintained a clean sheet for the fourth consecutive match, showcasing their defensive prowess throughout the tournament.
Despite a few counterattacks from Austria, Spain's control of the game was evident, with several near misses and excellent saves from Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.
With this victory, Spain, the reigning European champions, will head to Dallas on July 6 to face either Portugal or Croatia in the Round of 16.
Austrian hopes were dashed as they exited the tournament, marking their first knockout stage appearance since 1954.
