Spain's Readiness for Semifinal Showdown

California [US], July 11: Luis de la Fuente, the head coach of Spain, expressed confidence in his team's readiness for the upcoming semifinal against France, a favorite in the FIFA World Cup 2026. He emphasized that each match presents unique challenges and acknowledged the formidable nature of the French squad.

Following Spain's 2-1 victory over Belgium in the quarterfinals, De la Fuente recognized the quality of the French team and the threats they pose. He stated, "Every duel is distinct, and each match is a fresh challenge. We are fully aware of what they can deliver. It's not fair to evaluate players who have had limited playtime, as they are equally skilled as those on the field."

The coach also highlighted the strong camaraderie and character within the team, noting that mutual respect forms the foundation of their success. "This group exemplifies respect; everything is built upon that. We are fortunate to have not only exceptional players but also outstanding individuals. Looking at the bench gives me a sense of calm," he remarked.

De la Fuente praised Spain's resilience and specifically mentioned midfielder Mikel Merino for his vital contributions. "Spain is a team with heart, and that drives us. Mikel Merino is a player who excels in every aspect and embodies commitment and solidarity. He is an extraordinary player," he added.

He also expressed gratitude towards his coaching staff and support team, acknowledging their role in the team's accomplishments. "I am thankful to everyone who stands by me and my entire technical staff. I couldn't have achieved this alone. I am surrounded by a fantastic team that supports me at all times," he stated.

In the match against Belgium, Fabian Ruiz was surprisingly chosen to start over Pedri, and substitute Mikel Merino scored the decisive goal for Spain, while Charles De Ketelaere netted for Belgium. The match also saw goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois leave the field due to injury.

Ruiz opened the scoring after Courtois deflected Dani Olmo's shot into his path. Spain continued to pose a threat, with Lamine Yamal's energetic performance earning him the Player of the Match title.

Belgium equalized just before halftime when Kevin De Bruyne set up Timothy Castagne, whose accurate cross was headed in by De Ketelaere, who timed his run perfectly to remain onside.

This goal ended Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon's impressive streak of 560 consecutive World Cup minutes without conceding, surpassing the previous record of 517 minutes held by Italy's Walter Zenga since 1990.

Belgium faced a significant setback in the 71st minute when Courtois was substituted due to injury, replaced by Senne Lammens. The substitute goalkeeper was soon beaten when he failed to secure Pau Cubarsi's long-range shot, allowing Merino, who had just entered the game, to score the winning goal.

This victory marked Spain's 36th consecutive match without defeat since their loss to Colombia, matching Argentina's unbeaten streak from 2019 to 2022 and leaving them just one match shy of Italy's world-record 37-match unbeaten run.

Spain is now set to face France in a highly anticipated semifinal as they pursue another FIFA World Cup title.
