Spain Dominates Saudi Arabia with 4-0 Victory in FIFA World Cup 2026
Spain's Impressive Win Over Saudi Arabia
Atlanta [US], June 22: In a stunning display, Spain triumphed over Saudi Arabia with a decisive 4-0 victory during their Group H match in the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Sunday (local time).
Following a disappointing goalless draw against Cape Verde in their first match, Spain bounced back strongly, showcasing their potential in the tournament. Lamine Yamal initiated the scoring, followed by Mikel Oyarzabal, who netted twice, and an own goal from Saudi Arabia added to their woes.
Spain asserted their dominance right from the start, and their efforts were rewarded in the 10th minute when Yamal scored. The 18-year-old forward, assisted by Oyarzabal, calmly finished from close range, giving Spain an early lead.
This goal was particularly significant for Yamal, as he became the eighth-youngest player to score in FIFA World Cup history, achieving this feat at just 18 years and 343 days, according to Opta.
Continuing their offensive strategy, Spain maintained possession and pressured Saudi Arabia, leading to Oyarzabal's first goal in the 21st minute. He capitalized on a loose ball in the penalty area, extending the lead to 2-0.
Just three minutes later, Oyarzabal struck again, finishing off a clever setup by Dani Olmo inside the box, making it 3-0.
Saudi Arabia struggled defensively throughout the first half, with Oyarzabal nearly completing a hat-trick before halftime, only to be denied by the crossbar.
The match was effectively sealed four minutes into the second half when a deflected shot from Marc Cucurella resulted in an own goal by Saudi defender Hassan Altambakti.
With a comfortable four-goal lead, Spain managed the game well, making substitutions to rest key players. Saudi Arabia posed little threat, and goalkeeper Unai Simon had a quiet match.
In stoppage time, Ferran Torres thought he had scored a fifth goal, but VAR ruled it offside. Nonetheless, Spain's convincing 4-0 win marked a strong return to form in their World Cup campaign.
This victory propelled Spain to the top of Group H with four points from two matches, while Uruguay sits in second place, Saudi Arabia in third, and Cabo Verde in fourth.
