South Africa Women Dominate India in T20 World Cup Clash
South Africa's Bowling Excellence Shines
In a thrilling encounter at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Manchester, South Africa Women showcased a remarkable bowling performance, limiting India to a total of 158 runs for the loss of 7 wickets.
Despite a promising start from India, South Africa quickly turned the tide. Marizanne Kapp initiated the breakthrough by dismissing Smriti Mandhana for 17 runs, followed by Shabnim Ismail, who claimed the wicket of Shafali Verma, who scored 31 runs. Consequently, India concluded the powerplay at a score of 59 for 2.
Ayabonga Khaka added to the pressure by trapping Yastika Bhatia leg before wicket. Although India lost their top three batswomen, they maintained a decent scoring rate, reaching 82 for 3 after 10 overs.
Veteran bowlers Nadine De Klerk and Shabnim Ismail delivered crucial blows, reducing India to 116 for 5 by the 15th over. Jeminah Rodrigues fell victim to a caught and bowled by De Klerk, while Ismail's final over yielded the wicket of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who managed only three runs.
Harmanpreet Kaur, playing her 200th T20 match, became the first cricketer to achieve this milestone. South Africa's disciplined bowling in the latter half effectively curtailed India's powerful batting lineup to 158 for 7.
The last ten overs saw India score 76 runs while losing four wickets. This marks the second instance where India Women have surpassed 150 runs in a Women’s T20 World Cup without any player scoring a fifty-plus, the first being 163 for 5 against Bangladesh Women in Bengaluru back in 2016.
Shafali Verma was the top scorer for India with 31 runs, supported by Deepti Sharma with 29 and captain Harmanpreet Kaur contributing 24 runs.
On the bowling front for South Africa, Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail each took two wickets, while Nonkululeko Mlaba, Ayabonga Khaka, and Nadine De Klerk each claimed one wicket.
