South Africa's Remarkable Chase in Raipur

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], December 3: Aiden Markram's impressive century, along with significant contributions from Matthew Breetzke and Dewald Brevis, propelled South Africa to a remarkable victory against India in the second ODI of their three-match series on Thursday. The visitors successfully chased down a formidable target of 359 runs, matching the record for the highest successful chase in ODIs against India.

Previously, Australia had achieved this feat in Mohali in March 2019, led by Ashton Turner's unbeaten 84 runs off 43 balls.

With this win, South Africa has now accomplished three successful chases of 350 runs or more, tying with India for the most in ODI history. This match also set a new record for the highest aggregate runs in an ODI between these two teams, surpassing the previous total of 681 runs recorded in Ranchi on Sunday.

India batted first after being put in by the Proteas, who quickly reduced the hosts to 62/2 with the dismissals of Rohit Sharma (14) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (22). However, Virat Kohli (102 off 93 balls, including seven fours and two sixes) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (105 off 83 balls, with 12 fours and two sixes) formed a formidable partnership, adding 195 runs for the third wicket and putting India in a strong position.

Later, KL Rahul (66* off 43 balls, with seven fours and two sixes) and Ravindra Jadeja (24* off 27 balls, with two fours) contributed a brisk 69-run partnership for the sixth wicket, finishing India's innings on a high note.

Marco Jansen was the standout bowler for South Africa, taking 2 wickets for 63 runs.

In their chase, the Proteas started aggressively but lost Quinton de Kock early. Captain Temba Bavuma (46 off 48 balls, with three fours and a six) and Markram then combined for a crucial 101-run partnership.

Markram achieved his fourth ODI century and his first as an opener, scoring 110 runs off 98 balls, featuring 10 fours and four sixes. For India, Arshdeep Singh was the leading bowler with figures of 2 for 54, while Harshit Rana's performance deteriorated after a poor over, ending with 1 for 70. Prasidh Krishna's disappointing outing, conceding 82 runs in 8.2 overs, was a significant factor in South Africa's triumph.
