Ganguly's Praise for Gill's Leadership

In Kolkata, former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly expressed his admiration for Shubman Gill, the current Test skipper, highlighting his exceptional performance during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England.

Gill has discovered the key to success in England, showcasing an impressive array of shots that led to a record-breaking overseas tour. The inexperienced English bowling lineup has struggled to contain the Indian captain from Leeds to London.

Under Gill's leadership, India has challenged England fiercely, delivering a remarkable performance at Edgbaston and securing a resilient draw in Manchester. Despite facing challenges at Headingley and Lord's, the team's unwavering spirit has made Ganguly proud.

“Shubman Gill has been remarkable. When you entrust people with responsibility, they often rise to the occasion. His batting throughout the series has been exceptional. The quality of Indian cricket has been consistently impressive across generations, and it fills me with pride,” Ganguly stated at a press conference.

During the fifth and final Test at The Oval, Gill surpassed the legendary Sunil Gavaskar's record for the most runs scored by an Indian captain in a Test series. Gavaskar had set the record in the 1978-79 series against the West Indies, amassing 732 runs over six Tests and nine innings, averaging 91.50 with four centuries and a fifty, his highest score being 205.

Gill eclipsed Gavaskar's record by accumulating 737 runs in nine innings at an impressive average of 92.12, including four centuries and a top score of 269. He currently leads as the highest run-scorer in the five-match series and is just 38 runs away from breaking Gavaskar's record for the most runs in a bilateral Test series.

He had the opportunity to achieve this milestone during the first innings, demonstrating his solid technique under the overcast London skies. However, a moment of distraction led to his run-out at 21 runs off 35 balls when he attempted a single that was not on.
