Sophie Devine's Insights on Team Dynamics

Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], January 16: All-rounder Sophie Devine from Gujarat Giants has stressed the significance of effective communication, trust in local talent, and leadership across various experience levels as her team progresses in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026, as per a recent announcement.

Devine has had an impressive start to the season, amassing 141 runs and taking five wickets in the Giants' first three matches, playing pivotal roles with both bat and ball.

When discussing her batting strategy, the 36-year-old remarked, “For me, personal milestones are secondary to ensuring the team is in a winning position. It’s not about focusing on individual stats; it’s about making the best decisions for the team at that moment.”

On the playing conditions and her responsibilities, Devine noted, “In tournaments like this, on pitches like these, conceding boundaries is inevitable. What’s crucial is how you react. Whether batting or bowling, it’s essential to remain composed, adhere to your strategies, and contribute during critical moments for the team.”

She emphasized that domestic players are vital in franchise cricket, stating, “In this format, it’s the local players who truly make a difference. While overseas players may balance each other out, it’s the homegrown talent that can turn matches.”

Reflecting on the development of younger players in the Gujarat Giants lineup, such as Kashvee Gautam and Ayushi Soni, the New Zealand all-rounder expressed, “One of the best aspects of these tournaments is the learning opportunity for everyone involved. It’s not just the seasoned players imparting wisdom; it’s a two-way street. Many of these players have extensive experience in Indian conditions, more than I do.”

Devine highlighted the encouraging progress of Kashvee Gautam during the tournament, noting that such competitions are instrumental in helping players manage pressure and grow through exposure to high-stakes situations.

“Watching players like Kashvee learn to perform under pressure and improve with each match is incredibly exciting. These competitions are invaluable as they expose players to significant moments and facilitate rapid learning,” the Kiwi remarked.

Discussing Renuka Singh’s contributions, Devine stated, “Renuka is exceptional. She provides immense control and clarity with the new ball and during crucial overs. Having someone of her caliber leading the bowling attack instills confidence in the entire group. She remains composed, understands her strategies well, and has been a tremendous asset for us.”

As the tournament unfolds, the Gujarat Giants aim for consistency, with Devine playing a pivotal leadership role both on and off the field.
