Dubai, Sep 17: Sri Lanka's promising left-handed batsman Sonal Dinusha has been awarded the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for August 2026, marking a significant milestone in his career following an impressive performance against India.

Dinusha emerged as the top performer in the two-match Test series held at home against India, despite Sri Lanka's 1-0 defeat. He accumulated a remarkable 420 runs, boasting an average of 140, making him the leading run-scorer from both teams.

He kicked off the series with a brilliant century in the first Test at Galle International Stadium, followed by a resilient 84 in the second innings, although Sri Lanka lost by 165 runs.

In the second Test at SSC Ground in Colombo, Dinusha showcased his skills further, scoring 103 in the first innings and remaining unbeaten on 133 in the second, which helped Sri Lanka secure a hard-fought draw and avoid a series sweep.

His outstanding performance throughout the series included three centuries and one half-century, earning him the Player of the Match title in Colombo.

“This recognition is incredibly meaningful to me, especially at this early stage of my career. I am sincerely thankful to the ICC for this honor. The series against India will always be special for me. Achieving three centuries in front of our home crowd was a dream come true,” Dinusha expressed regarding the accolade.

“Even though we didn’t achieve the desired outcome overall, the resilience our team displayed in the second match highlighted our character and determination. I am proud to have fought alongside my teammates,” he added.

Having made his Test debut against Bangladesh in a home series last year, Dinusha has quickly become a vital player for Sri Lanka in Test cricket.

“It is a privilege to represent Sri Lanka, and this recognition fuels my motivation to continue learning, improving, and contributing to the team. I will strive to give my best for Sri Lanka in the future,” he stated.

Dinusha was nominated for the award alongside England's Ollie Robinson and Bangladesh's Hasan Mahmud.

Robinson had a standout month, taking 16 wickets during England's home Test series against Pakistan, including remarkable figures of 8-80 in the first Test at Headingley and 8-35 at Lord’s.

Meanwhile, Mahmud played a crucial role in Bangladesh's historic Test win over Australia in Darwin, claiming six wickets in the first innings and three in the second, leading to a 1-1 series finish.

Ultimately, it was Dinusha's exceptional batting against India that secured him the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for August.
