Together, they propelled India to an impressive eight-wicket victory against the West Indies in the second ODI on Wednesday.

The West Indies had hoped that their target of 405 runs would be out of reach for the Indian team, but they were mistaken. Gill, who recently claimed the record for the fastest ODI double century from teammate Ishan Kishan, and Sharma, who achieved his 35th ODI century, formed a formidable opening partnership, amassing 255 runs in just 26.2 overs, leading India to a total of 406 for two in 43.3 overs.

On a night filled with record-breaking performances, India not only achieved their highest ODI run chase but also positioned themselves just behind South Africa's record of 435 runs against Australia in 2006.

The pitch at Barsapara had already shown its batting-friendly characteristics, as West Indies players John Campbell (101), Shai Hope (104), and Amir Jangoo (114) also scored centuries.

However, once India began their chase, those centuries seemed insignificant. They surpassed their previous best chase of 362 runs against Australia in 2013, thanks to Gill's explosive innings (223 runs off 133 balls, including 26 fours and 8 sixes).

Initially, India faced the challenge of achieving their first-ever 400-plus chase, but Gill and Sharma elevated their game with an impressive array of shots.

During the match, Rohit crossed the milestone of 12,000 ODI runs, becoming only the seventh player and the third Indian, after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, to reach this landmark. He celebrated his century with a unique hop and jump.

The partnership concluded at 254 runs when Rohit was dismissed for 101 off 75 balls, leaving India needing just 151 runs from 24 overs, a manageable task given the form of the home side.

After being put to bat first, Campbell set the tone for the West Indies with a rapid 65-ball century, effectively exploiting India's inexperienced pace attack.

Admiring Chris Gayle, Campbell played aggressively, scoring 101 runs off 68 balls, including 9 fours and 5 sixes.

Hope and Jangoo maintained control throughout the innings, with Hope scoring a superb 104 off 94 balls, while Jangoo reached his second ODI century in just 69 balls, finishing with 114 runs, leading the West Indies to a total that surpassed their previous best of 389 against England in 2019.

With Jasprit Bumrah on Asian Games duty and Mohammed Siraj unavailable, India is testing new talent ahead of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
