Guwahati, Oct 1: In a stunning display of batting, Shubman Gill outshone renowned players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli by scoring a record-setting double century, leading India to chase down West Indies' formidable total of 405 for seven with eight wickets remaining in the second ODI at the ACA Stadium.
Gill finished with an impressive 223 not out as India achieved 406 for two in just 43.3 overs, marking their highest successful chase in ODI history. His innings, which spanned 133 balls, was the highlight of a match that saw a remarkable total of 811 runs scored at the venue. With this victory, India secured a commanding 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Setting a new record, Gill recorded the fastest double century in ODI history and became the first Indian captain to achieve this milestone. He reached his 150 in a mere 89 balls, the quickest by an Indian in ODIs, before leading India to a decisive win.
Rohit Sharma provided a solid foundation for the team with a score of 101 off 75 balls, becoming only the third Indian to surpass 12,000 runs in ODIs, following legends Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
When Rohit was dismissed in the 26.2nd over, Kohli entered the field to a roaring crowd. However, he managed only 29 runs before being dismissed, disappointing many fans.
Rohit has a stellar record at the ACA Stadium, having scored an unbeaten 152 against West Indies in 2018 and 83 against Sri Lanka in 2023. Kohli has also made his mark here with two centuries, scoring 140 against West Indies in 2018 and 113 against Sri Lanka in 2023. India's chase was remarkable, reaching 300 runs in just 29.1 overs, the fastest any team has achieved this in ODI history.
Earlier in the match, Gill won the toss and chose to field, but the West Indies capitalized on the batting-friendly conditions. Three West Indies players scored centuries, leading to their highest ODI total of 405 for 7. John Campbell scored 101 off 68 balls, Shai Hope made 104, and Amir Jangoo contributed 114 off 77 balls.
Campbell's century was particularly noteworthy, coming off just 65 balls, marking the fastest ODI hundred by a West Indies player against India. This match also marked the first instance of three West Indies players scoring centuries in a single ODI innings. Additionally, medium-pacer Auqib Nabi made his international debut for India during this match.
Brief scores: West Indies 405/7 in 50 overs (John Campbell 108, Shai Hope 104, Amir Jangoo 114; Kuldeep Yadav 2/65) lost to India 406/2 in 43.3 overs (Rohit Sharma 101, Shubman Gill 233 not out; Shamar Joseph 1/52) by 8 wickets.
