Shubman Gill's Leadership Under Scrutiny

Former Indian cricketer Murali Kartik has expressed that the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka will serve as a significant challenge for Shubman Gill's captaincy. Despite some concerns regarding his fitness, Kartik remains confident in Gill's batting capabilities.

Gill, who succeeded Rohit Sharma as the Test captain in May of the previous year, is set to lead the Indian team in a two-match series starting August 15 in Galle. Currently, India ranks fifth in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings, having secured four victories, suffered four losses, and recorded one draw across nine matches.

In a virtual discussion, Kartik conveyed that he is not worried about Gill's ability to score runs but emphasized the importance of his fitness. He stated, "I have no doubts about Shubman Gill's batting skills; he is a class player who will find ways to score. However, his fitness is paramount, especially since he has faced numerous injuries and minor issues. We want him to be fit throughout the series, as missing games due to injury is not ideal."

Gill had to sit out the initial two days of India's warm-up match against Sri Lanka XI after injuring his right ring finger during practice. He made a comeback on the final day, scoring a quick 44 runs off 54 balls, helping India chase down a target of 207 runs.

Sairaj Bahutule, India's spin bowling coach, has assured that Gill is "very much ready" for the Test in Galle. However, Kartik reiterated the necessity for Gill to maintain his physical fitness throughout the series, especially given the pressures associated with captaining the Indian team.

Kartik remarked, "As an athlete, feeling 100% physically is crucial. If you're dealing with aches or injuries, you can't perform at your best. Therefore, I hope he remains fit and healthy throughout the series."

Gill's leadership will be closely observed in Sri Lanka, particularly as India aims to improve its standing in the WTC. Kartik noted that captaining India comes with immense pressure, as every decision will be scrutinized.

He added, "As a captain, your reputation is tied to your last game or series. The burden of leadership in Indian cricket is significant, and Shubman Gill will face constant questioning regarding his decisions. This series is vital for India's WTC aspirations, adding to the pressure he faces."

This series marks Gill's inaugural Test captaincy in Sri Lanka, following a successful leadership stint in England. He will be supported by a robust batting lineup, including seasoned players like KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja.

India's squad for the series consists of 15 members, including Dhruv Jurel, Devdutt Padikkal, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Saransh Jain, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Auqib Nabi, and Sarfaraz Khan.

With the WTC final set for June next year, India must avoid dropping too many points in the remaining matches. Thus, the two Tests against Sri Lanka present Gill with a crucial opportunity to bolster India's campaign in the WTC (2025-27).
