In Guwahati, Indian captain Shubman Gill showcased an extraordinary performance during the second ODI against West Indies, leading his team to a remarkable chase of 406 runs. He achieved the fastest century by an Indian skipper and set a new record for the quickest double century in ODI history.

Gill formed a formidable opening partnership of 255 runs with Rohit Sharma, establishing a strong foundation for the chase. His innings of 208 runs off 149 balls included an astonishing 24 fours and seven sixes, allowing him to reach the double ton in just 117 balls.

Remaining unbeaten at 223 runs from 133 balls, Gill's strike rate exceeded 167, marking the third-highest ODI score ever, trailing only Rohit Sharma's 264 and Martin Guptill's 237*. This performance surpassed Ishan Kishan's previous record of a 126-ball double century against Bangladesh in 2022, making Gill the second player, alongside Rohit Sharma, to achieve multiple double tons in ODIs.

Additionally, Gill became only the second player after Glenn Maxwell to score a double century while chasing, with Maxwell's 201 not out against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup serving as the benchmark.

Gill's achievement also included becoming the first player to score a double century while captaining in both Tests and ODIs, having previously scored 269 against England in a Test match last year.

He surpassed Virender Sehwag's record of 219 runs against West Indies in 2011, setting the highest ODI score for an Indian captain.

Gill reached his second consecutive century of the series and third ODI century on home soil in just 62 balls, breaking Rohit Sharma's record for the fastest century by an Indian skipper, which was previously set at 63 balls against Afghanistan during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.

However, the record for the fastest ODI century in men's cricket still belongs to Virat Kohli, who scored a 52-ball century against Australia in 2013.

Gill also achieved the fastest 150 runs by an Indian in ODIs, reaching the milestone in just 89 balls.

In 11 ODIs this year, Gill has amassed 894 runs at an impressive average of 127.71 and a strike rate of 119.51, including three centuries and five fifties.

Overall, in 69 ODIs and 68 innings, he has scored 3,712 runs at an average of 65.12, with 11 centuries and 20 fifties.

In the match, India won the toss and opted to field first. West Indies set a record total of 405/7, thanks to centuries from John Campbell (101), Shai Hope (104), and Amir Jangoo (114).

Despite the West Indies' strong batting performance, India successfully chased down the target with contributions from Rohit Sharma (101), Gill's double century, and valuable innings from Virat Kohli (29) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (31*), achieving their highest ODI chase with eight wickets remaining.
