Shubman Gill Sets New Records in Manchester Test Against England
Historic Performance by Shubman Gill
In Manchester, on July 27, Shubman Gill is making headlines as he continues to solidify his legacy. During the fourth day of the Test match, the Indian captain surpassed Virat Kohli's record from the 2014-15 series in Australia, achieving the highest runs by an Indian player on a SENA tour (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia).
Currently, Gill remains not out at 78, bringing his total to an impressive 697 runs in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, with one more day left in this Test and another full match scheduled at The Oval.
At just 25 years old, he has eclipsed Kohli's 692 runs from the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and has recorded the second-best performance by an Indian captain in Test series, both at home and abroad.
The only record ahead of him is the legendary Sunil Gavaskar's remarkable 732 runs against the West Indies in the 1978-79 series, achieved over six Tests. Given Gill's current form, Gavaskar's record may soon be at risk.
Remarkably, Gill has already secured three centuries in this series. If he converts his current innings into a fourth century on Day 5, he will join the elite ranks of Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar for the most centuries by a captain in a single Test series.
Kohli, who scored 655 runs in five Tests against England at home in 2016-17, has now dropped in the rankings for the best series performances by an Indian captain.
Gill's impressive temperament, timing, and desire for significant runs have been on full display throughout this tour.
On the fourth day of the Test, India faced challenges early in their second innings but managed to recover. However, they still find themselves in a precarious position, trailing England, who scored a massive 669 in their first innings, leading by 311 runs.
The Indian second innings began poorly, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudarshan dismissed for ducks. However, KL Rahul and Captain Shubman Gill steadied the innings with a remarkable partnership of 174 runs.
By the end of Day 4, India had reached 174/2, still 137 runs behind England. If the Indian team can salvage the match on the final day, it will be a significant achievement.
In the last session, England failed to take any wickets as Indian batters added 126 runs, with KL Rahul remaining not out at 87 and Shubman Gill at 78.
