Shubman Gill's Response to T20 World Cup Selection

After being omitted from the T20 World Cup roster, Shubman Gill, who captains India's ODI and Test teams, expressed his respect for the selectors' choice and emphasized his commitment to performing at his best whenever called upon.

At 26 years old, Gill was not selected for the upcoming T20 World Cup, despite his leadership in longer formats. He has participated in 36 T20 internationals, accumulating 869 runs with an average of 28.03 and a strike rate of 138.59.

Speaking to the media before the first ODI against New Zealand, Gill stated, "I am where I need to be, and what is meant for me is beyond anyone's control."

"Every player aims to give their all for the nation, and the selectors have made their choice. I focus on living in the moment, which simplifies things," he added.

India is set to play three ODIs followed by three T20 matches leading up to the T20 World Cup, commencing on February 7.

Reflecting on his debut against New Zealand, Gill remarked, "That match holds a special place in my heart."

"No format is straightforward; the Indian team hasn't clinched an ODI World Cup since 2011. It's easy to say, but every format demands significant effort and determination," he noted.

In November, Gill missed the second Test against South Africa and the subsequent ODI series due to a neck injury sustained during the first Test in Kolkata, which required hospitalization for two days.

"Missing out and watching the team play is never easy. There are numerous things I wish to accomplish as captain, and maintaining momentum is crucial," he commented.

Gill highlighted the significance of preparation, especially when switching formats.

"In the last two Test series, we lacked sufficient preparation time... Had we won against South Africa, it wouldn't have changed much, but preparation is vital for me. We didn't have enough time before the South Africa and West Indies series at home," he explained.

"It's beneficial to have adequate time to prepare when transitioning from white ball to red ball cricket," Gill concluded.
