Stokes' Absence a Major Blow for England

As the Indian team prepares for the fifth Test against England at The Oval, captain Shubman Gill has expressed that the absence of Ben Stokes due to a right shoulder injury is a significant setback for the English side.

Stokes has been a standout player for England throughout the series, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. Over four matches, he has scored 304 runs at an impressive average of 43.42, which includes a century.

On the bowling front, he has emerged as England's leading wicket-taker, securing 17 wickets, more than any other player in the series. His performances earned him the Player of the Match title in both the third and fourth Tests.

Gill remarked, “His absence is a big loss for England. He always brings excitement to the game, whether batting or bowling. From their perspective, it’s definitely a setback. However, the players stepping in are equally competitive and can contribute significantly.”

The Indian captain also commended teammate Sai Sudharsan for his performance in the previous match, noting that despite being dismissed for a golden duck in the second innings, his half-century in the first innings was commendable.

“He scored a half-century in the last Test, so I wouldn’t say he had a bad game. Getting out for a duck can happen to anyone. I heard he scored a half-century outside India after a couple of years, which is a positive for us,” Gill added.

Gill further praised all-rounder Washington Sundar for his contributions with both bat and ball in the ongoing series, highlighting his ability to stabilize the lower middle order.

“Washington provides us with great control in bowling, and his batting has been a significant asset. We are lucky to have players like him who can prevent collapses in crucial moments. Our lower middle order has improved with his inclusion,” he stated.

In the three Tests played so far, Sundar has accumulated 205 runs in six innings, averaging 51.25, including a century. He has also taken seven wickets at an average of 35.85, with his best figures being 4/22 at Lord’s.

Overall, Sundar has proven to be a valuable player for India, amassing 673 runs in 12 matches and 22 innings at an average of 44.86, along with 32 wickets at an average of 27.87, including a five-wicket haul and a ten-wicket match.
