Gujarat Titans' Captain Faces Penalty

Shubman Gill, the captain of the Gujarat Titans, has been penalized ₹12 lakh by the BCCI due to his team's slow over rate during their recent match against the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026. This fine comes despite the Titans securing a thrilling victory. This marks Gill's first infraction of the season, placing him alongside Shreyas Iyer, who has faced similar penalties twice, and Abhishek Sharma, who had a confrontation with the umpire.

The match showcased an exciting final over, with Gill demonstrating composure under pressure. He turned to Prasidh Krishna to bowl the last over, needing to defend 13 runs. Krishna had previously made a significant impact as a substitute player, and despite his nerves, he successfully prevented the Capitals from reaching their target, even with the formidable David Miller at the crease.

According to the IPL's statement, "Gujarat Titans (GT) Captain Shubman Gill has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 14 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Delhi Capitals (DC) at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi." This penalty is in accordance with Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate violations. Should this occur again, Gill's fine will double, and a third violation could lead to a one-match suspension.

The match itself was filled with drama, particularly regarding Miller's decision to deny Kuldeep Yadav a single on the penultimate ball, which led to a narrow victory for the Titans by just one run. The situation became tense as the Capitals needed two runs off the last two balls, but Miller's choice ultimately resulted in Kuldeep being run out, denying Delhi a chance for a third consecutive win.

Gill was the standout performer for the Titans, scoring 70 runs off 45 balls, including five sixes and four fours. He received solid backing from Jos Buttler and Washington Sundar, both contributing 50 runs to help the Titans set a formidable total of 210/4. Meanwhile, the Capitals, led by KL Rahul's impressive 92, started strong but fell short due to the exceptional bowling from Prasidh and Player of the Match Rashid Khan, despite Miller's quickfire 41 not out.
