Shubman Gill made headlines by scoring his 11th Test century during the one-off Test match against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. The Indian captain reached this remarkable milestone on Saturday, June 6, and was eventually dismissed for 126 runs on the second day of the match. At just 26 years old, this marks his sixth century as captain in the longest format, achieved less than a year after he first led the national team.

Shubman Gill's Record-Breaking Performance

During his innings in his hometown, Gill also crossed the 1000-run mark as captain. He has batted 15 times in Test matches while leading India, accumulating a total of 1076 runs at an impressive average of 82.76, which includes six centuries and one half-century. In the 149-year history of Test cricket, 101 captains have scored over 1000 runs, but only Don Bradman boasts a better average than Gill. Notably, no other captain has an average exceeding 70 runs.

Gill's achievement of reaching 1000 runs as a captain in Test cricket came in just 15 innings, making it the joint third-fastest in history, and the second-fastest for an Indian, following Don Bradman (11 innings). He is also the quickest Indian captain to achieve this milestone in terms of days, accomplishing it 351 days after his captaincy debut, surpassing the previous record held by Sachin Tendulkar (402 days). Additionally, Gill ranks third in terms of runs scored as captain after 15 innings, trailing only Bradman (1244 runs) and Graham Gooch (1094 runs).
