Shreyas Iyer Prepares for England T20I Series After Ireland Setback
Iyer Reflects on Ireland Loss and Looks Ahead
Chester-le-Street [UK], June 30: As India gears up for the first T20I against England, captain Shreyas Iyer emphasized the importance of balancing opportunities for players while ensuring senior members feel secure. He described the recent 0-2 series defeat to Ireland as "depressing."
Following the unexpected loss to Ireland, the Indian team, led by Iyer, is set to face England in a five-match series starting Tuesday in Chester-le-Street.
In a press conference, Iyer acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, "This is a great opportunity, and it will be tough. The last series didn’t go as planned, but everyone is in a positive mindset, and we are eager for an intense game. Staying calm under pressure will be crucial for us."
He further elaborated on the need to foster confidence among players, saying, "We must create opportunities and security for each individual, allowing them to build confidence for upcoming tournaments. Those who contributed to our last World Cup victory understand T20 cricket well and are vital to our strategy."
Iyer noted that while the defeat to Ireland was disappointing, it was not embarrassing. He praised Ireland's strategic play, particularly regarding the ground's dimensions, which he described as somewhat "squarish." He expressed that Team India is now more attuned to the conditions in England and is ready for the challenge.
"It was a depressing loss because we didn’t anticipate Ireland performing so well. They outperformed us in all aspects, and we fell short in our analysis and planning for the ground conditions. We learned a lot from that series," Iyer remarked.
Looking ahead, he referred to the England series as a "completely new chapter." He mentioned that several players have prior experience in England, which will aid them in adapting to the conditions.
Iyer, who scored only 3 and 10 in the T20Is against Ireland, is confident in his batting abilities, stating, "I feel good about my timing in the nets. Even in the last match, I was timing the ball well, despite a few unfortunate bounces. That doesn’t reflect my overall performance or the pressure I felt."
He expressed faith in his instincts, saying, "I know how well I perform under pressure, and I want to maintain that confidence moving forward."
Regarding the potential debut of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Iyer remained tight-lipped, stating, "Our options are limited in terms of what we can disclose. This is a private matter discussed within the team, and we cannot reveal our plans to the opponents."
He concluded by praising Sooryavanshi's talent, saying, "He is a remarkable prodigy, and whenever he gets the chance to play, he will undoubtedly excel."
