Shreyas Iyer on the Brink of 3000 Runs Milestone in ODI Cricket
Shreyas Iyer Approaches Historic 3000 Runs
Shreyas Iyer is poised to make history as he stands just 23 runs shy of reaching a significant milestone for India. With a total of 2977 runs accumulated over 70 innings, Iyer needs to score 23 runs in the upcoming series opener against Afghanistan on Saturday (June 13) to become the fastest Indian to achieve 3000 runs. Currently, the record is held by Shikhar Dhawan, who reached this mark in 72 innings. If Iyer takes two innings to reach the 23-run target, he will share the record with Dhawan.
Globally, the fastest record belongs to Hashim Amla, who accomplished this feat in just 57 innings, followed by Shai Hope with 67 innings. Among Indian players, Virat Kohli ranks second, having reached 3000 runs in 75 innings, while KL Rahul follows with 78 innings.
Shreyas Iyer: India's Number 4 Batter
Since making his ODI debut in 2017, Iyer faced challenges in securing a spot, missing out on the 2019 ODI World Cup team. However, he established himself as India's number four batter by the 2023 World Cup, where he scored 530 runs. Iyer also excelled in the Champions Trophy, leading the Indian scoring with 243 runs. Recently appointed as India's vice-captain for the 2025 Australia tour, he continues to support Shubman Gill.
Iyer made a strong return to T20I cricket and was named captain, marking his first T20I appearance since December 2023, although he has yet to lead India in international matches.
