Shreyas Iyer Commends Shubman Gill's Innovative Captaincy in IPL Opener
Exciting IPL Opener Highlights Shubman Gill's Leadership
Shreyas Iyer expressed admiration for Shubman Gill's captaincy following the Punjab Kings' (PBKS) victory over the Gujarat Titans (GT) in their first match of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on March 31. This match marked the season's first nail-biter, with the home team clinching a three-wicket win with just five balls remaining. After winning the toss, PBKS opted to bowl first, allowing GT to set a target of 162 runs, with Shubman emerging as the top scorer, contributing 39 runs off 27 balls.
In response, Cooper Connolly made a remarkable debut, scoring an unbeaten 72 runs off 44 balls, guiding the 2025 finalists to victory despite a tense moment. The match took a turn when Shreyas was dismissed, leading to a batting collapse for PBKS, who went from 110-2 to 118-6. Shreyas scored 18 runs off 11 balls before being struck on the hand by a shot from Connolly while at the non-striker's end. GT's strategy to place a short leg while Shreyas batted was particularly noteworthy, showcasing an aggressive approach rarely seen in T20 cricket, especially when the Punjab team was well on track in their chase.
Despite the unusual field placement, Shreyas tackled the challenge head-on, hitting two sixes off Ashok Sharma's short deliveries. After the match, he shared his surprise at the tactics, mentioning to Shubman that it was an experience he had never encountered before. 'I was genuinely surprised. I told Shubman that was something I had never experienced before. It is refreshing to see captains take an aggressive stance,' Shreyas remarked during the post-match presentation. Shubman, who captains the Titans, also leads the Indian Test and ODI teams, with Shreyas serving as his vice-captain in ODIs since last year.
