Shreyas Iyer Celebrates Historic T20I Series Win as India Sweeps Zimbabwe
India's Dominance in T20I Series
In Harare, India’s captain Shreyas Iyer expressed his pride in the team's fearless approach and the maturity displayed by its younger players after achieving a 3-0 clean sweep against Zimbabwe. He described this victory in his first T20I series as captain as a "remarkable moment."
The final match concluded with India securing a 35-run win, successfully defending a total of 192/5 while limiting Zimbabwe to 157/7.
Reflecting on his initial series victory since taking over the T20I leadership, Iyer commended the squad's energy and determination throughout the series.
He noted, "The players have shown incredible energy and intent, especially during back-to-back matches. This level of enthusiasm is what I seek as a captain, and they delivered today as well. Winning the series here in Zimbabwe feels special, especially with a clean sweep of 3-0."
When asked about his role among the younger players, Iyer emphasized that experience is shared across the team, and his main goal is to keep the atmosphere relaxed.
"If you look at the records, I have played a similar number of matches as many of them, around 55 to 60. So, in terms of experience, there are several players with significant exposure, especially with their IPL backgrounds," he explained.
"They are exceptionally talented, and maximizing their potential benefits the team. Every time I step onto the field, I ensure they feel comfortable and relaxed, as that’s when they perform their best," he added.
India's victory was bolstered by a stellar performance from 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 81 runs off 49 balls, including eight fours and four sixes, helping the team reach 192/5 after opting to bat first.
Ishan Kishan contributed 29 runs, while Iyer added 27 off 18 balls, and Rinku Singh finished with a quick 25 runs off just 14 balls.
Zimbabwe struggled in their chase, losing Brian Bennett on the first ball of the innings to Yash Thakur, who also dismissed Dion Myers and Sikandar Raza in a brilliant opening spell. Mayank Yadav excelled with figures of 3/29, while Ravi Bishnoi and Ashok Sharma each took a wicket. Ryan Burl fought valiantly with an unbeaten 54, but the hosts ultimately fell short by 35 runs.
Iyer expressed satisfaction in seeing various players stepping up and taking responsibility in different aspects of the game.
"It’s crucial as a captain to witness players taking charge and winning matches. This momentum is vital for our future. We need to maintain consistency in our approach and mindset," he stated.
Looking ahead, Iyer acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the importance of maintaining calmness and courage for the future of Indian cricket.
He added that the team focused on continuous improvement rather than fixating on results, stating, "From the first match, we aimed to elevate our standards. It’s essential to focus on enhancing our performance each time we step onto the field."
"We communicated to all players that regardless of the situation, it’s vital to play to the best of our abilities and ensure the team succeeds," Iyer concluded.
This series victory marked India's third consecutive T20I win after a challenging period of six straight losses during tours of Ireland and England, providing Iyer with a successful start to his captaincy.
