Shreyanka Patil Faces Injury Setback Ahead of Women's T20 World Cup
Injury Concerns for Shreyanka Patil
Shreyanka Patil, India's off-spinner all-rounder, is expected to miss upcoming matches in the Women's T20 World Cup due to an ankle ligament injury. The injury occurred during a match against the Netherlands, prompting immediate medical attention and scans.
Patil was carried off the field in Leeds shortly after beginning her bowling spell, having twisted her ankle while pursuing a ball towards mid-on. She was visibly in distress, unable to put weight on her right leg, which led to the team physio calling for a stretcher, as reported by a sports media outlet.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet announced a replacement for Patil, although several players from the India A women's team currently in England are being evaluated for the role.
The squad, under the leadership of Anushka Sharma, features off-spinner Minnu Mani, left-arm spinners Tanuja Kanwar and Vaishnavi Sharma, leg-spinner Prema Rawat, and Anushka herself, who also bowls off-spin. These players may be considered for a call-up to the World Cup.
This injury marks another hurdle in Patil's career, which has been plagued by injuries. She previously broke a finger in July 2024, sidelining her from that year's T20 World Cup, and has also dealt with shin splints and a wrist stress reaction that kept her out of action for nearly a year.
After her recovery, she participated in the Women's CPL 2025 and played a crucial role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's title-winning campaign in WPL 2026.
In their recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup match, India showcased a commanding performance, defeating the Netherlands by 95 runs. This victory propelled India to the top of Group A with four points.
Batting first, India achieved their highest-ever T20 World Cup score of 209/5, thanks to an impressive opening partnership between Smriti Mandhana (74 off 47 balls) and Shafali Verma (55 off 38 balls), who contributed 115 runs for the first wicket. Richa Ghosh (20*), Harmanpreet Kaur (12), and Deepti Sharma (10*) added valuable runs in the final overs.
The Netherlands began their innings steadily but suffered a dramatic collapse, going from 96/4 to 114 all out in just 17.3 overs. Shree Charani excelled with the ball, taking 4/19, while Shafali Verma (3/20) and Nandini Sharma (2/22) also made significant contributions as India's bowlers dismantled the lower order.
This match highlighted a well-rounded team effort, with India's top-order batting and disciplined bowling leading to a decisive victory.
