Shilpi Dabas Celebrates Her Debut with Indian Hockey Team
Shilpi Dabas Makes Her Mark in Indian Hockey
Shilpi Dabas has proudly donned the Indian jersey for the first time. The defender from Sonepat made her debut during the FIH Nations Cup, contributing to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the USA. Her performance was pivotal as the team went on to defeat New Zealand, ultimately clinching the tournament title.
After an eight-year wait for a call-up to the national camp, Shilpi has now secured her position as a regular starter. With the World Cup and Asian Games on the horizon, she is eager for her next challenges.
Reflecting on her debut, Shilpi shared, "Winning the tournament in my first tour was incredibly special. I felt a mix of nerves during my initial game against the USA, especially when we were behind, but we managed to turn it around and win 3-2. It was an unforgettable experience."
Shilpi began her hockey journey at the sports complex in Chandigarh’s Sector 42 before joining the Pritam Siwach Hockey Academy in Sonepat. Since joining the Railways in 2018, she has been a consistent performer in domestic competitions, yet she had not received a call for national camps until recently.
"After the Nationals, I was hopeful for a call-up, but it never came. Just when I had lost hope, I was invited for a trial. Now, I feel grateful," she remarked, having previously won the HIL with SG Pipers.
Shilpi arrived at the SAI training facility in Bengaluru just an hour before her trial match. The official notification allowing her to relocate came at the last minute.
"I got there in the morning, played in the trial match, and was subsequently invited to join the national camp," she explained.
Emotional Family Support
Shilpi's family, including her father Anil, mother Anita, and brother Sahil, who are all hockey players, were overwhelmed with joy upon hearing about her debut.
"We had a video call, and my parents were ecstatic when they found out I was making my debut. They were emotional, having waited so long for this moment. They reminded me that this is just the beginning, and I have a long journey ahead," Shilpi recounted.
