A New Hope in Indian Women's Javelin

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 14: Neeraj Chopra's remarkable javelin throw at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics not only earned him a gold medal but also ignited a wave of interest in javelin among Indian athletes. This surge has led to the emergence of talents like Commonwealth Games 2026 bronze medallist Yashvir Singh and Rohit Yadav in men's javelin, while the women's category has been waiting for a standout star until now.

Shilpa Kumari, hailing from a small village in Gumla, Jharkhand, has emerged as a promising figure in women's javelin, holding the national record in the U-17 category, as reported by SAI Media.

Witnessing Neeraj Chopra's Olympic victory on television alongside her neighbors was a transformative moment for Shilpa. "Seeing Neeraj win gold inspired me to pursue javelin. I aspire to follow in his footsteps and earn an Olympic medal," she shared during a conversation with SAI Media.

The celebration in her village following Chopra's triumph motivated her to set her sights on Olympic success in javelin.

Her journey began at an athletics trial at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in Ranchi, which fueled her Olympic aspirations.

Shilpa's coach, Binod Singh, recalls the day he recognized her potential as a future star in women's javelin. "I first noticed her three years ago during a trial at our SAI center. Despite being a novice, her natural talent and strong throwing ability stood out, prompting me to select her for training," he explained.

Under Singh's guidance at the SAI center, Shilpa made remarkable progress, quickly establishing herself as a leading prospect for India in women's javelin.

Coming from a farming family with limited resources, Shilpa's parents could not provide the necessary support for her athletic career. However, the training, facilities, and nutrition provided by SAI have been instrumental in her development.

Shilpa gained national attention in 2025 when she set a new U-17 women's record with a throw of 55.62m at the 69th National School Games. This achievement surpassed the previous U-18 national record of 55.19m set by Deepika from Haryana in 2023, although it was not officially recognized by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) due to the competition's lack of sanctioning by World Athletics.

Her official personal best was recorded at the 2025 Junior Nationals, where she finished fifth with a throw of 45.90m, marking an improvement of nearly 10 meters.

"As an athlete, my focus is solely on performing my best. If my throw isn't officially recognized, I aim to surpass it in my next competition," Shilpa stated.

Coach Binod Singh remains optimistic about Shilpa's future, confident that she will continue to excel as she transitions to senior-level competitions. "Shilpa is not worried about official recognition; we know her capabilities, and she will achieve that mark again," he affirmed.

Currently, Shilpa is preparing for the Summer Youth Olympics, set to take place in Dakar, Senegal, from October 31 to November 13, 2026. "My immediate goal is to secure a podium finish at the Youth Olympics, but my ultimate dream is to win an Olympic medal," the enthusiastic teenager expressed.

"I will dedicate my Olympic medal to Neeraj sir," she concluded.
