Nagoya, Oct 22: In a remarkable achievement, Sheetal Devi and Toman Kumar, both bronze medallists at the world level, clinched the gold medal in the Compound Mixed Team event at the Asian Para Games held here on Thursday.
The Indian pair triumphed with a score of 151-148 against their Indonesian opponents, marking India's first gold in archery for this edition of the Para Asian Games.
This victory adds to Sheetal's accolades at the Aichi-Nagoya games, where she previously secured a silver medal in the Para Compound women's doubles alongside Payal Nag.
During the competition, Sheetal and Toman set a new world record in the mixed team round, with the 18-year-old scoring 704 points out of a possible 720, equaling the world record previously held by Turkiye's Oznur Cure Girdi.
Additionally, Sheetal surpassed her own Asian record of 698, which she set in Bangkok earlier this year, by six points, and elevated the Asian Para Games record from 680 to 704. The duo, who are the reigning world champions and currently ranked number one, achieved a combined score of 1402 points in the mixed team qualification, breaking the former world record of 1400, also established by India.
Sheetal, the defending champion in the compound individual category, began her campaign at the Asian Para Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 with an impressive performance on Monday, equaling the world record in the compound women’s qualification. She later partnered with quadruple-amputee archer Payal in the compound women’s doubles qualification.
Their joint score of 1379 not only set new Asian and Games records but also surpassed the previous Asian record of 1378. Payal contributed significantly with 675 points, leading the Indian duo to the top of the women's doubles rankings.
Previously, Sheetal had won gold in the women's compound individual event at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou and secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Despite her youth, she has established herself as a leading figure in the sport.
On the other hand, Toman is recognized as a world champion in the men's compound individual category and holds the title of world No. 1 in his classification.
