Shashi Tharoor Advocates for Young Cricket Prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi's Inclusion in National Team
Tharoor's Bold Comparison
In a recent statement, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor drew a parallel between the cricketing prowess of 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi and that of the iconic Sachin Tendulkar. Tharoor has called on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to consider Suryavanshi for the national team.
Tharoor expressed on X, "The last time a fourteen-year-old displayed such extraordinary talent in cricket, it was Sachin Tendulkar – and we all know his remarkable journey. What are we waiting for? Vaibhav Suryavanshi for India!" He tagged Gautam Gambhir, BCCI, Sachin Tendulkar, and Ajit Agarkar in his post.
Record-Breaking Performance
Suryavanshi, a rising star from Bihar, made headlines by scoring a record-breaking century during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 Plate League match against Arunachal Pradesh on December 24. At just 14 years and 272 days, he became the youngest player to achieve a century in men's List A cricket.
This remarkable feat marked Suryavanshi's first non-T20I century in senior cricket, accomplished in a mere 36 balls, making it the third-fastest century for India in List A matches. This was his seventh List A appearance, having debuted against Madhya Pradesh in December 2025.
Breaking Records
Additionally, Suryavanshi broke the record previously held by South African cricketer AB de Villiers for the fastest 150 in men's List A cricket. He reached the 150-run milestone in just 59 balls, surpassing de Villiers' record of 64 balls set against the West Indies in 2015.
Suryavanshi concluded his innings with an impressive 190 runs off 84 balls, featuring 16 fours and 15 sixes, achieving a phenomenal strike rate of 226.19.
Historic Match Outcome
In the match between Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh, Suryavanshi's outstanding 190 runs, along with his captain Sakibul Jani's explosive 128* off 40 balls (including 10 fours and 12 sixes), contributed to a historic total of 574/6, the highest in List A cricket history.
Arunachal Pradesh struggled in response, collapsing to 177 all out in 42.1 overs, resulting in a staggering defeat by 398 runs.
