Serena Williams' Wimbledon Return Ends in Heartbreak

London [UK], July 1: In a highly anticipated return to Wimbledon after a four-year hiatus, Serena Williams faced a tough defeat against Maya Joint, following an intense match on Centre Court.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner, making her comeback at 44, displayed flashes of her former brilliance against the 20-year-old Australian player, even saving a match point in the second set to push the match into a deciding set.

Ultimately, however, Williams fell short, losing the match with scores of 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.

In her post-match interview, Joint expressed her disbelief, stating, "I really don’t know what to say! I don’t know what just happened, to be honest. I didn’t get much sleep last night, thinking about this moment. My legs weren’t moving well during the warm-up, so I’m surprised I started strong in the match."

She continued, "Serena has such an incredible presence; she’s a true legend. I’ve dreamed of this moment since childhood, so it feels surreal. The beginning was nerve-wracking, and finishing the match was challenging as well."

Meanwhile, third seed Iga Swiatek, who is defending her title, also faced a challenging first-round match. After a grueling two-hour battle, she secured a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Taylor Townsend, which took a toll both physically and emotionally.

Swiatek reflected on her performance, saying, "It’s been a tough few weeks, and this season hasn’t gone as planned. I hadn’t won any three-set matches this year, so I’m pleased to have achieved that here, especially as the defending champion."
