Senegal's President Commends National Team After Heartbreaking World Cup Exit
A Heartfelt Tribute to the Lions of Teranga
Seattle [US], July 2: Following Senegal's dramatic exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye expressed his support for the national team, praising their valiant efforts despite a painful 3-2 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32.
In a post shared on X after the match, Faye stated, “Our Lions bow out tonight. The journey ends here. The lessons from this World Cup will fuel the path ahead. Thank you to the Lions. Thank you to the staff. The Nation stands by your side.”
Senegal seemed on track for the last 16, having established a two-goal lead against Belgium in Seattle, only to experience one of the tournament's most dramatic turnarounds.
After a balanced start, Senegal took control when Habib Diarra scored from close range, following Ismaila Sarr's header that hit the post from Sadio Mane's cross.
Just six minutes into the second half, Sarr extended Senegal's lead by skillfully finishing a long ball past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. This marked his fourth goal of the tournament, tying the record for the most goals by an African player in a single FIFA World Cup, equaling Roger Milla's record from 1990.
Belgium, however, staged a remarkable comeback led by their seasoned players. Romelu Lukaku narrowed the gap with a near-post finish, and Youri Tielemans headed in the equalizer, pushing the match into extra time.
Both teams had opportunities during the additional 30 minutes, but the pivotal moment arrived deep into stoppage time when VAR awarded Belgium a penalty after Lamine Camara fouled Tielemans in the box.
In the 125th minute, Tielemans converted the penalty, completing an incredible comeback and securing Belgium's 3-2 victory, extending their unbeaten streak to 17 matches.
Belgium advanced to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Senegal exited the tournament, having come so close to a memorable win.
President Faye's message highlighted the team's efforts, encouraging players to channel their disappointment into motivation for future endeavors.
