Seema Kaliramna's Journey to the Commonwealth Games

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 30: In recent seasons, Seema Kaliramna has distinguished herself as one of India's top discus throwers, overcoming various personal and professional hurdles to secure her place among the nation's elite athletes.

Following a successful return to competitive sports after becoming a mother, Seema clinched gold at the 2025 National Games and earned the national title. Now, at 27, she approaches the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in peak form.

With a personal best throw of 59.73m recorded earlier this season, along with consistent performances that ensured her qualification for the Commonwealth Games, Seema emphasizes that success in discus throwing relies more on patience and consistent practice than on attempting a single impressive throw.

“In discus, consistency is just as crucial as distance. Each training session is about making incremental improvements, trusting the process, and ensuring that I can replicate my best throws when it counts. I’m pleased with my preparations this season, and Glasgow presents another chance to challenge myself against a strong lineup,” she stated, as reported by the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS).

Juggling her athletic career with motherhood and pursuing a PhD has made Seema's journey one of remarkable resilience. She attributes her success to the robust support system surrounding her, which has enabled her to compete at the highest levels.

“Returning to competition after motherhood taught me to be more patient with myself. There were times when managing training, my PhD, and family duties felt overwhelming, but each challenge has strengthened my mental fortitude. The encouragement from my family and the team at the Inspire Institute of Sport has kept me focused on my objectives and allowed me to continue progressing as an athlete,” she added.

Ravinder Kaliramna, Seema's husband and coach, believes her unwavering consistency has been her greatest asset this season.

“Seema has never sought shortcuts. Whether it was her return after motherhood or balancing her PhD with training, she has approached everything with discipline and consistency. We have concentrated on refining the small technical details daily, which is why she has reached this level. I am confident she is prepared to compete with the best and savor the experience in Glasgow,” he remarked.

Having firmly established herself among India's leading discus throwers, Seema reflects on her journey, noting that her most significant lesson has been to prioritize execution over results.

“Over the years, I’ve learned that every competition is a chance to learn. I take pride in how far I’ve come, but I also recognize that there’s still room for growth. My focus is on enjoying the competition, executing my throws, and continuing to improve with every opportunity,” she concluded.

As she enjoys the most successful season of her career, Seema is poised to carry this momentum into one of athletics' premier events, aiming to leave her mark at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
