Vettel's Heartfelt Tribute to Schumacher

Monza [Italy], September 6: Sebastian Vettel, a four-time Formula 1 world champion, paid a touching homage to his childhood hero Michael Schumacher by taking the legendary Ferrari F2002 for a spin around the Monza circuit ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, as reported by a Media House.

This event was part of the Schumacher Legacy Celebration Run, commemorating 30 years since the seven-time world champion joined Ferrari. Vettel delighted fans, known as Tifosi, by performing donuts in the iconic car after completing demonstration laps.

The experience was particularly emotional for Vettel, who had long admired Schumacher and later raced for Ferrari himself. "I have mixed feelings because, while it’s a fantastic car to drive, it’s also Michael’s car, and he’s not here today," Vettel expressed after exiting the F2002.

He added, "I felt his presence during these laps, and I hope you felt him too." Since retiring from Formula 1 at the end of 2022, Vettel reflected on his lasting passion for motorsport and the community surrounding it.

"Even though I’ve stopped racing, my heart remains with this sport, the cars, the fans, and the Tifosi who make it special," he stated.

Vettel reminisced about the light-hearted banter he shared with Schumacher regarding emotional moments, admitting that he found it difficult to hold back tears this time. "We used to joke about getting emotional, and now I’m the one with tears in my eyes," he said.

He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to drive the F2002, a car celebrated as one of the most successful in Formula 1 history, which helped Schumacher secure his fifth consecutive drivers' championship in 2002.

Vettel quickly grasped the significance of the vehicle once behind the wheel. "It’s exhilarating. It doesn’t take long to feel the soul of a car, and you immediately sense it’s something special," he remarked.

He found himself torn between pushing the historic Ferrari and savoring the moment. "I was doing donuts, and the crowd was thrilled. I wanted to push the car but also wanted to enjoy this beautiful experience," he noted.

Vettel emphasized the vibrant atmosphere at Monza and the deep connection between Schumacher, Ferrari, and the Italian fans. "You can feel how alive Michael’s spirit is here, just as Ferrari’s spirit is," he added.

Ferrari dedicated the Italian GP weekend to celebrating Schumacher’s legacy, featuring a special livery adorned with seven stars symbolizing his world championships. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton also donned Schumacher-inspired race suits.

Schumacher triumphed at the Italian Grand Prix five times with Ferrari, in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2006. The 2026 Monza weekend also marks two decades since his last victory with the Scuderia.

"Today is Michael’s moment, and we send all our love and emotions to him," Vettel concluded.

Vettel raced for Ferrari from 2015 to 2020, achieving 14 Grand Prix victories and finishing as runner-up in the world championship in 2017 and 2018. While his return to Ferrari at Monza held personal significance, he emphasized that the day ultimately celebrated Schumacher and his lasting legacy.
