Scotland's Historic Win in World Cup Return

Massachusetts [US], June 14: Scotland celebrated their long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory against Haiti in their Group C opener at Gillette Stadium on Saturday. The match was decided by a crucial first-half goal from captain John McGinn.

In their first World Cup appearance of the 21st century, Steve Clarke's team climbed to the top of Group C, marking their first World Cup win since 1990.

Scotland started the match with enthusiasm, nearly scoring within three minutes when Ben Doak forced a low save from Haiti's goalkeeper, Johny Placide, after a swift run. Although Haiti applied some pressure, Scotland's defense held strong, with Angus Gunn facing minimal threats.

In the 17th minute, Scott McTominay came close with a powerful shot from the edge of the box that went just wide. Their persistence paid off just before the half-hour mark when McGinn broke the deadlock.

After Placide blocked a close-range attempt from Che Adams, the ball fell to McGinn, whose deflected shot found the back of the net, ending Scotland's 28-year wait for a World Cup goal. This goal also made the Aston Villa midfielder the oldest Scottish scorer in World Cup history.

Encouraged by a passionate traveling crowd, Scotland nearly extended their lead shortly after, but Lawrence Shankland's header from a dangerous Doak cross went narrowly wide. Haiti remained a threat and almost equalized before halftime when Ruben Providence's powerful shot slipped through Gunn's hands, but Scottish defenders quickly cleared the danger.

The second half saw fewer clear chances, with Haiti pushing for their first-ever World Cup point. Providence continued to challenge Scotland's defense, while Wilson Isidor and Frantzdy Pierrot both came close to scoring.

McGinn had a chance to secure the win midway through the second half but missed the target under pressure from Ricardo Ade. Nevertheless, Scotland's defense held firm during a late surge from Haiti, ensuring they preserved their slim lead.

This victory sets Scotland up perfectly for their upcoming challenging matches against Morocco and Brazil, while Haiti will be looking to earn points in their remaining games.
