Glasgow [Scotland], July 28: Indian high jumper Sarvesh Kushare has etched his name in history by securing a silver medal in the men's high jump at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking him as the first Indian to achieve this feat in the event.

The national record holder successfully cleared a height of 2.25 metres during the final but narrowly missed out on the gold after three attempts at 2.28m were unsuccessful. Jamaica's Romaine Beckford also cleared 2.25m but took home the gold medal based on countback, having had a cleaner series of jumps. England's Kimani Jack earned the bronze with a best jump of 2.20m, as reported by ESPN.

Kushare required his third attempt to clear the 2.25m mark, while Beckford achieved this height on his first try, a crucial difference that determined the outcome of the gold medal.

Entering the competition in peak form, Kushare had recently set a new national record of 2.31m at the National Inter-State Championships just a month prior. In Glasgow, he confidently navigated the initial heights before achieving his best clearance of 2.25m, securing a podium finish.

India's other competitors in the event had varied results, with Aadarsh Ram finishing in fifth place, while 2022 CWG bronze medalist Tejaswin Shankar withdrew after his first jump.

Kushare's silver medal represents India's fifth silver and tenth overall medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where the country has thus far won two golds, five silvers, and three bronzes.

In another highlight, Sharmila Dhankar brought home India's second gold medal by winning the women's shot put F57 title with a season-best throw of 9.81 metres. She finished ahead of Ghana's Zinabu Issah (8.65m), while fellow Indian Shilpa Shyla secured the bronze after Nigeria's Eucharia Iyiazi was disqualified.
