Sarfaraz Ahmed Takes the Helm as Head Coach
Former captain of the Pakistan cricket team, Sarfaraz Ahmed, is set to assume the role of head coach for the Test squad. Azhar Mahmood had been serving as the interim coach during the recent series against South Africa. As reported by GeoNews, Sarfaraz will officially take charge during the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh scheduled for May. Renowned for his leadership, Sarfaraz guided Pakistan to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017 and recently led the U19 team to triumph in the U19 Asia Cup. Following this success, fans have been vocal in their support for his appointment as head coach of the national team.
Pakistan's Standing in the World Test Championship 2026-2027
Currently, Pakistan ranks fifth in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. Their initial series was a home contest against South Africa, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The team is preparing for their next challenge, the tour of Bangladesh in May. Additionally, Pakistan will host Sri Lanka and New Zealand during this WTC cycle and will also compete in away series against England and the West Indies. Notably, Pakistan has yet to reach the WTC final, presenting a significant challenge for Sarfaraz.
Sarfaraz Ahmed's Impressive Record
Throughout his career, Sarfaraz has played 54 Test matches for Pakistan, amassing 3,031 runs, which includes four centuries and 21 half-centuries. He was appointed captain after demonstrating success in limited-overs formats, leading the team in 13 Test matches with four victories, including a historic win at Lord’s against England in 2018. His last appearance for Pakistan was against Australia in Perth in 2023. In the ODI format, Sarfaraz has participated in 117 matches, scoring 2,315 runs with two centuries and 11 fifties, while in T20Is, he has played 61 matches, accumulating 818 runs.
