Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan Gears Up for Commonwealth Games with High Hopes
Santhosh Kumar's Journey to the Commonwealth Games
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 28: Indian hurdler Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan, supported by the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), is heading into the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a strong sense of confidence. His recent international performances, including participation in the Paris Olympics and the Asian Athletics Championships, have bolstered his belief in his abilities.
The 28-year-old athlete, who was part of India's 4x400m relay team at the Paris 2024 Olympics, has had a remarkable season in 2026. He secured a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles and a gold in the mixed 4x400m relay at the Asian Athletics Championships, while also achieving a personal best time of 49.06 seconds. Earlier this year, he triumphed at the Indian Athletics Series in Thiruvananthapuram, showcasing the consistency that has characterized his recent performances, as noted in a press release from IIS.
With a series of impressive international results behind him, Santhosh is now focused on his Commonwealth Games campaign, aiming to maintain the momentum he has built over the past two seasons. As India's athletics team prepares to make a significant impact in Glasgow, the Tamil Nadu hurdler is determined to deliver his best performance on this major international platform.
Reflecting on his journey, Santhosh mentioned that the experiences of the last two years have reinforced his confidence while reminding him that each competition is a new challenge.
“The past two years have been crucial for my growth as an athlete. Competing at the Olympics and excelling at the Asian Championships has instilled a lot of confidence in me, but every championship is a fresh start. The Commonwealth Games is another chance to represent India, and my focus is on executing my race to the best of my ability. I prefer not to dwell on the outcome. If I can perform as we have trained, I will be satisfied with my efforts,” he stated.
Santhosh attributes much of his preparation for this major championship to the support system around him, particularly the Inspire Institute of Sport, which has allowed him to concentrate fully on his development.
“My preparation has been excellent leading up to the Commonwealth Games. The time spent at the Inspire Institute of Sport has enhanced my skills in various areas, including technical work, strength and conditioning, recovery, and sports science. At this level, even minor improvements can lead to significant differences, and the encouragement from my coaches and support staff at IIS gives me immense confidence. It enables me to focus entirely on my training and approach competitions feeling well-prepared,” he added.
Having consistently improved his timings over the past year, including achieving a personal best of 49.06 seconds this season, Santhosh emphasizes the importance of trusting the process.
“Every season imparts new lessons. This year, I have been able to enhance my timings and maintain consistency, which boosts my confidence. However, I don’t fixate on personal bests after a race. The goal is always to keep progressing, as that is the only way to compete with the world's top athletes. I enjoy this journey and aim to continue building on it,” he remarked.
As he prepares to don the Indian jersey once more, Santhosh expresses that representing his country is the greatest honor of his career.
“Wearing the Indian colors is always a source of immense pride for any athlete. Each time I step onto the track in the Indian jersey, I know I am competing for something far greater than myself. I am thankful to my family, coaches, and everyone who has supported me throughout my journey. At the Commonwealth Games, my goal is to give my all on the track and make my country proud,” he concluded.
With an Olympic experience already under his belt and a stellar season propelling him into Glasgow, Santhosh is eager to continue his upward trajectory at the Commonwealth Games. This event offers him another chance to establish himself among the continent's elite 400m hurdlers while marking another significant milestone in his burgeoning career.
