Samson's Stellar Performance Leads India to Victory

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], March 6: Indian opener Sanju Samson expressed his joy after a remarkable match-winning display against England in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final held at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. He emphasized his intention to capitalize on the excellent form he brought into this crucial match.

Samson, who earned the Player of the Match title for his outstanding innings, shared that he approached the game with confidence, having performed well in the previous match. He focused on giving himself ample time at the crease to accumulate a significant score.

“It feels fantastic. I knew I was in good form from the last game. I aimed to maximize my performance, so I took my time. We understand that no score is unbeatable, and I wanted to achieve as much as possible. England played exceptionally well and came close. It was a thrilling semi-final. Assessing the conditions is crucial. We’ve played a lot here and know that chasing is generally easier,” Samson remarked after receiving his award.

India's innings was bolstered by a vital partnership between Samson and Ishan Kishan, which propelled the team towards a substantial total. Their aggressive yet strategic approach allowed India to sustain momentum during the middle overs, setting a formidable target against a robust English bowling lineup.

Samson has excelled against slower deliveries throughout the T20 World Cup, amassing 71 runs off 28 balls with an average of 35.30 and an impressive strike rate of 253.57, including five fours and seven sixes. Interestingly, slower deliveries have been a challenge for India in this T20 World Cup.

With 16 sixes in this tournament, Samson surpassed Rohit Sharma's record of 15 sixes in the 2024 edition, marking him as the Indian player with the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup.

In this tournament, he has scored 232 runs across four matches, averaging 77.33 with a strike rate of 201.73, including two fifties and a top score of 97* against West Indies in a crucial quarter-final.

During their partnership, both batters felt that a target of around 250 runs was within reach, given the conditions and their established rhythm.

Samson also praised star bowler Jasprit Bumrah, referring to him as a "once in a generation" talent for his significant impact during the match.

“The way Ishan and I were batting, we believed that 250 was achievable. I’m very pleased. All credit goes to Bumrah; he’s truly exceptional. I think this award should be his. It’s an incredible feeling to play here, and we aimed for a positive outcome. Scoring a hundred doesn’t matter; this isn’t a Test or ODI where you can fluctuate. I’m happy with whatever I contribute to a winning effort,” Samson added during the post-match presentation.

Batting first, Sanju Samson delivered a fiery performance with 89* runs off 42 balls, including eight fours and seven sixes, supported by Shivam Dube (43 runs in 25 balls), Ishan Kishan (39 runs in 18 balls), Hardik Pandya (27 runs in 12 balls), and Tilak Varma (21 runs in seven balls), leading India to a total of 253/7 in 20 overs.

Despite reducing England to 95/4, India couldn't maintain their dominance as Jacob Bethell (105 runs in 48 balls) and Will Jacks (35 runs in 20 balls) formed a counter-attacking partnership worth 77 runs for the fifth wicket.

Bethell continued to push forward even after Jacks’ dismissal, and a quick-fire cameo of 19 runs from Jofra Archer brought England close, but they ultimately finished at 246/7.
