Samson's Stellar Performance Leads India to Victory

Christchurch [New Zealand], October 22: Sanju Samson was instrumental in securing a four-wicket win for India over New Zealand in the first T20I held in Christchurch, earning him the Player of the Match title for his impressive half-century.

After the match, Samson expressed his happiness about contributing to a successful start in the series, highlighting that the win was a team effort rather than just his individual success. He acknowledged the collective contributions that led to this opening victory and welcomed the positive momentum as they embark on the five-match series.

In the first T20I, India triumphed over New Zealand by four wickets, with Samson scoring a remarkable 67 runs, laying a solid foundation for the chase.

"It feels great. We are just in the moment where the match has been won. Whatever contribution you make, it feels good to be on the winning side. It was a fantastic team effort today, and I’m really pleased we started the series on a high note," Samson remarked post-match.

Samson, along with Abhishek Sharma, provided a dynamic start, putting together 93 runs in just 35 balls for the first wicket. He emphasized the strong rapport he shares with Sharma at the top of the order, noting that their strategy is more instinctual than meticulously planned.

He elaborated that while they engage in frequent discussions during play, their primary focus is on watching the ball and playing aggressively. "We do have a lot of conversations happening in the middle, but nothing makes sense, actually. We just watch the ball and hit hard. It has been working very well for us, and I enjoy batting with him at the top," Samson added.

Samson also mentioned that his experience as a wicketkeeper helped him gauge the pitch conditions, although he adjusted his approach once he came out to bat. He observed that the ball initially held up on the surface but became easier to play as heavy dew set in later in the match.

"Absolutely, you definitely think about your batting while you are keeping wickets. But I think today I summed up my way to play the game while keeping, but when I came to bat, it was completely different. In the first half, the ball was stopping a bit from the length area, but in the second half, I think the ball was coming on very nicely with heavy dew in the outfield. So I really enjoyed the batting," Samson concluded.

After Samson's dismissal, Naman Dhir and captain Shreyas Iyer played crucial roles in stabilizing the innings, leading India to victory. Dhir finished unbeaten on 42 runs off just 15 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes, thus giving India a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.
