Sanjay Manjrekar Critiques CSK Management and Dhoni's Influence
Manjrekar's Strong Words for CSK Owners
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has expressed his frustration with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management following a disappointing start to the season. The commentator did not hold back in his criticism, attributing the team's struggles to the decisions made by the franchise's leadership. He also took aim at the intense fandom surrounding MS Dhoni, suggesting that it has led to a culture of sycophancy within Indian cricket.
Manjrekar specifically pointed to the handling of Ruturaj Gaikwad's performance, stating, “I place the blame squarely on the owners and decision-makers. Gaikwad was exceptional before taking on the captaincy. The uncertainty regarding Dhoni's role—whether he would play or lead—was poorly managed. This reflects the sycophantic culture that has infiltrated cricket.”
He recounted an incident where he faced backlash from CSK supporters for suggesting that Dhoni should have been run out during a match, highlighting how fans can lose perspective when it comes to their idol.
Furthermore, Manjrekar questioned whether Dhoni's return from injury would positively impact the team, pondering how he could fit into the lineup given his recent struggles. He compared the challenges faced by CSK and the Mumbai Indians, suggesting both teams are overly attached to their star players, which may hinder their performance. “CSK, in particular, seems stuck in the past with Dhoni. It's crucial to focus on players who are currently in their prime, especially in a fast-paced format like T20,” he concluded.
