Sandeep Singh Mann Wins Silver at Asian Wrestling Championship, Ending Punjab's 22-Year Wait
Historic Achievement for Punjab Wrestler
In a significant achievement for both Punjab and India, wrestler Sandeep Singh Mann secured a silver medal in the 79kg freestyle category at the Asian Wrestling Championship. This victory marks the first time in 22 years that a wrestler from Punjab has reached the senior-level Asian finals.
Sandeep faced a tough challenge in the final, narrowly losing 2-1 to Japan's Keyvan Gharehdaghi. He advanced to the finals after a commanding victory over Somonjon Ikromov from Tajikistan in the semifinals.
Originating from Burj Rathi village in Mansa district, Sandeep comes from a modest farming background, with his father, Sagar Singh, managing around four acres of land. Despite financial constraints, Sandeep's unwavering dedication to wrestling has led him to achieve international recognition.
He has honed his skills under the mentorship of seasoned coaches throughout Punjab, including Sukhmandar Singh at the Malwa Wrestling Club in Bhagta Bhai Ka village and Mukesh Kumar in Khanna. His passion for wrestling was ignited during his childhood.
Currently, Sandeep is training at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) camp in Lucknow, where he has access to a well-structured national training program. Reports indicate that his job as a wrestling coach in Bathinda allows him some flexibility to focus on his training.
Family members have shared that Sandeep received strong support from his extended family, particularly his uncle, who played a crucial role in his upbringing. He also has one sister.
Shahbaz Singh, the general secretary of the Punjab Wrestling Association, noted, "Previously, Palwinder Singh Cheema had represented Punjab in the men's senior category."
