In a heartfelt message, former Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar praised Kane Williamson, the New Zealand cricketer, as a "true gentleman and an exemplary role model for the youth" following his unexpected retirement from international cricket on Friday.
Tendulkar took to X to commend Williamson's technical prowess and elegance as a batsman, noting his exceptional balance, timing, and composed demeanor at the crease. He emphasized that Williamson's batting style has consistently been a joy to watch.
Reflecting on Williamson's career, Tendulkar remarked, "Since my early days in cricket, Kane has stood out as one of the most technically proficient and remarkable batsmen I've encountered. His balance, timing, and signature calmness at the crease have made his batting a consistently delightful experience in the cricketing world. He is indeed a thorough gentleman and a genuine role model for aspiring cricketers."
Tendulkar also humorously suggested that Williamson's retirement might bring a sense of relief to various bowling teams, wishing him all the best in his future endeavors.
Williamson's retirement marks the end of an illustrious international career, during which he participated in 378 matches for New Zealand. The 35-year-old concludes his journey as the nation's leading run-scorer, amassing 19,346 runs, which includes 48 centuries and six double-centuries, as reported by New Zealand Cricket (NZC).
His final appearance for New Zealand was in the first Test against England at Lord's, where he unfortunately scored a duck in the first innings and added 18 runs in the second, leading to a 115-run defeat for his team.
As captain, Williamson led New Zealand in 40 Test matches, achieving 22 victories, 10 losses, and 8 draws, placing him second to Stephen Fleming, who has 28 wins from 80 Tests. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he captained the team in 91 matches, securing 46 wins, 40 losses, 1 tie, and 4 no-results, again trailing behind Fleming's record of 98 wins from 218 ODIs.
Williamson also holds the record for the most T20I wins as a New Zealand captain, with 39 victories in 75 matches.
