Saba Karim Commends Jasprit Bumrah's Skills Despite India's Loss to South Africa
Bumrah's Impact in the Test Match
In a recent discussion, former Indian wicketkeeper Saba Karim praised Jasprit Bumrah's exceptional performance during the first Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens. Karim emphasized that Bumrah maintains focus on controllable factors, allowing him to perform effectively regardless of the pitch conditions.
South Africa triumphed over India by 30 runs in this opening match, as India struggled to chase a target of 124 runs in the fourth innings. The match concluded in just three days, with both teams facing challenges in batting; Temba Bavuma was the sole player to achieve a half-century. This victory marked South Africa's first Test win on Indian soil in 15 years, dating back to 2010. India aims to level the series in the upcoming second Test in Guwahati.
During the JioStar show 'Game Plan', Karim identified Bumrah as India's key bowler for breaking partnerships in any scenario. He noted that Bumrah's current fitness and eagerness for wickets are promising signs for the team.
"He focuses solely on what he can control, making pitch conditions irrelevant for him due to his unique skill set that shines when the team needs it most, whether in the first or second innings. For breaking partnerships, Jasprit Bumrah is your go-to bowler," Karim stated.
"In all conditions, he’s the bowler to rely on. In this Test match, aside from the final day when he was brought in late, he was utilized effectively. His extended spell in the first innings proved beneficial. His fitness and desire to take more wickets bode well for India," Karim added.
Karim also commented on opener Yashasvi Jaiswal's aggressive batting style, suggesting that while it is commendable, he needs to refine his shot selection as he gains experience. Karim observed that Jaiswal displayed impatience at Eden Gardens, attempting to score quickly instead of adapting to the conditions, which ultimately led to his dismissal in the first innings.
"While his approach is commendable, as a batter matures, judicious shot selection becomes crucial. I understand the desire to maintain an attacking mindset, but it’s essential to choose the right ball and surface for those shots. I didn’t see that in Jaiswal’s performance during this Test match," Karim remarked.
"In the second innings, although he faced a remarkable delivery from Marco Jansen, his first innings performance indicated a loss of patience. He aimed to score quickly or hit big shots early in his innings, adhering to his template of starting fast and building later. Sometimes, adjusting your scoring strategy is necessary to accumulate runs and forge partnerships. This is an area where Yashasvi Jaiswal can improve," he concluded.
