Kochi (Kerala) [India], March 28: Ryan Williams, who was born in Australia, is on the verge of making his debut for the Indian national football team on March 31 in Kochi against Hong Kong during the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers, as reported by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The 32-year-old player received FIFA clearance last November after a lengthy eligibility process.

With experience from playing in Australia, England, and India, Williams stands out as a unique former foreign league player representing India. He hopes that his journey will motivate other players of Indian descent to pursue international careers with the Indian team.

Reflecting on the long wait since receiving clearance, Williams shared, "Since we got the clearance, all I’ve been thinking about is March 31."

The delay was frustrating; FIFA's Players' Status Chamber approved his eligibility just hours too late for him to join India's squad against Bangladesh on November 18, 2025.

Although he trained and traveled to Dhaka with his new Indian passport, he was unable to play at the National Stadium in Bangladesh's capital.

Despite this setback, Williams chose to maintain a positive outlook. "You always try and look at the silver lining," he remarked. "Although I couldn’t be part of that game, at least now I may get to make my debut in the blue jersey, and in front of our fans."

The Blue Tigers are set to face Hong Kong, China, in the final match of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi.

This debut could be significant, not just in the orange kit but potentially in India's iconic blue, at home, in front of fans who have welcomed him.

"I don’t know what the feeling is going to be like yet," he said. "I’ve thought about it, but we’ll have to wait and see," added the 32-year-old from Perth.

The anticipation is heightened due to the lengthy process he underwent to represent India, which he described as "not a short one." It involved regulatory scrutiny, extensive documentation, and ultimately, FIFA's approval in November 2025, confirming his eligibility after switching from Football Australia to the All India Football Federation.

"A big sense of relief," Williams recalled. "To finally get it all over the line and be here feels really, really special."

There were moments when his journey seemed unlikely. "A lot of people told me this is not possible," he said. "Me being a bit stubborn, I didn’t really take much notice."

That determination proved crucial. Until he received the final confirmation and held the Indian passport, it didn't feel entirely real.

Three years ago, upon arriving in India, he was just another foreign player. However, recent developments have made his story unique. With his official transition, Williams becomes a rare case, effectively the first former foreign player in the Indian football league system to represent the national team.

While his professional career began in Australia and England, Williams' ties to India are deep-rooted. His mother is from Mumbai, and his grandfather, Lincoln Grostate, made his mark in Indian football by representing Bombay in the Santosh Trophy. His twin brother, Aryn Williams, played for NEROCA FC in the I-League from 2017 to 2019. This legacy is significant to him.

Williams' arrival is not merely another addition to the squad; it signifies a pivotal moment in the evolution of Indian football.

Having honed his skills in Australia and England, where he played for clubs like Portsmouth, Fulham, and Oxford United, he moved to India to join Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League in 2023. In 2019, he also represented the Australian national team in a friendly against Korea Republic.

"It’s a full-circle moment," he expressed. "For my grandfather to have played in the Santosh Trophy, and now for his grandson to come back and be part of the Indian national team, it’s something really special. It’s something my family is very proud of."

However, entering a new national setup is challenging, especially with heightened expectations and scrutiny. The significance of wearing the Indian jersey is immense.

"I was nervous coming in," Williams admitted. "You don’t know how everybody is going to receive you."

Fortunately, familiarity helped ease his transition. After spending two seasons with Bengaluru FC, he already knew many players, which made the adjustment smoother.

"They’ve been really welcoming. I can’t be more thankful," he said.

As each day in camp passes, his sense of belonging grows stronger. More conversations, shared training sessions, and a developing rapport on and off the pitch contribute to this.

"This is my second camp, and I admit I’ve come in a lot more comfortable than the last one because I’ve become more familiar," he noted. "Everyone in the camp is very humble, very nice. We’re always happy and smiling."

Since the news of Williams obtaining an Indian passport and renouncing his Australian citizenship broke, he has received significant online attention, with his Instagram following more than doubling.

"It’s been a bit overwhelming," he confessed. "I’m not really one for the limelight. But I haven’t had a single bad message; it’s all been words of pride."

He encourages young players in India, saying, "Take the ball, try things. Don’t be scared to mess up. Sometimes you might make a fool of yourself trying to beat someone, but that’s part of it."

For players of Indian origin abroad, Williams emphasizes the potential for success. "The long-term goal for me is to hopefully encourage other players of Indian origin to do the same thing. No matter what people tell you, it is possible. You can come here, you can make a difference."

As the date approaches, everything circles back to March 31. "I’ve been preparing mentally for this game for a long time," Williams stated.

When that moment finally arrives, it will symbolize more than just a debut. It will mark the conclusion of a journey that traversed continents and overcame uncertainty, and the beginning of a new chapter in India's cherished blue jersey.
